New Hampshire's largest lake combines open-water cruising with protected island passages and several waterfront towns. The variety makes it excellent for families, but its size and summer traffic deserve respect.

Choose one side of the lake
Meredith is convenient for western-basin access and a polished town stay. Wolfeboro makes a strong eastern home base. Picking one prevents the weekend from becoming a race across the lake.
Plan for island navigation
Use current charts and keep a careful lookout around narrow passages, shoals and markers. A chartplotter is useful, but it does not replace local awareness or conservative speed.
Before you launch
Check New Hampshire boating requirements, local speed rules, launch parking, marina reservations and the day’s thunderstorm risk. Start early to enjoy calmer water.
