A chartplotter should be readable in sun, operable in chop and matched to the equipment already aboard. More features do not rescue a screen that is too small or a bundle with the wrong transducer.

How to choose
Buy screen area before novelty
Mock up the display dimensions at your helm. Make sure it does not block gauges, switches, sightlines or access to the wheel. Split-screen mapping and sonar become substantially easier at nine inches and above.
Confirm the entire system
The product name alone is not enough. Confirm included cartography, transducer type, mounting hardware, power requirements, networking ports and whether a sun cover is supplied.
Match the waters
Inland cruising mainly needs dependable charts and clear routing. Fishing adds sonar priorities. Coastal travel makes radar, AIS and network redundancy more valuable.
