A submerged-object strike can range from a light propeller nick to structural damage that opens a leak, distorts steering or compromises a shaft, gearcase, transom or hull. The sound and the operator's first glance do not reliably rank the damage. The safe response reduces power, stabilizes people and position, checks for flooding and loss of control, communicates early and treats any abnormal vibration or uncertainty as a reason to stop using the propulsion system.
Get off the throttle without creating a second collision
Bring the throttle back promptly and maintain only the control needed to avoid traffic, shore, shoals or another hazard. Warn the crew, seat everyone and confirm fitted life jackets are on. Attach the engine cut-off switch link as required if the engine must run for immediate maneuvering. Keep a lookout on the object, nearby vessels and the boat's drift.
Do not make an abrupt turn toward people, paddlers or rocks just to return to the impact point. Do not reverse hard over an unknown obstruction. Once the boat has safe water and room, shift to neutral and shut down according to the engine instructions. A strike in a channel, current, surf or commercial traffic may require a different stabilization move than a strike on a quiet lake. Preserve control first, then inspect.

Check people before machinery
Ask each person directly about falls, impact, pain and head contact. A passenger may have been thrown against a seat or rail even when the hull shows no obvious damage. Keep children seated and calm, account for every person and look for someone who entered the water or lost needed medication or communication equipment.
Use first aid within the crew's training. Call for emergency assistance when injury, person overboard, uncontrolled drift or immediate danger exists. Do not delay a distress call while trying to produce a perfect mechanical diagnosis. Give position, vessel description, people aboard and the nature of the problem plainly.
Assign one adult to passengers and communication so the operator is not simultaneously opening hatches, watching traffic and calming children. The VHF distress-call practice makes that division usable before an emergency.
Look for water immediately—and keep looking
Open only safe, accessible hatches and inspect bilges, lockers, transom areas, through-hulls, shaft logs and compartments near the impact. Listen for rushing or trickling water. Check the bilge-pump indicator and high-water alarm, but do not interpret pump noise as proof that the boat is keeping up. Verify actual discharge where it can be observed safely.
Compare the water level after a short interval. A slow rise is still a leak. Identify the source only when it can be reached without entering machinery spaces, moving under unsupported components or exposing the crew to fuel, electrical or entanglement hazards. Do not touch the propeller until the engine cannot start
Before any close inspection, shut the engine down, remove the key or disable starting as the manufacturer directs, and confirm every person knows not to operate controls. Keep hands, hair, clothing and lines away from the propeller. Do not enter the water beside the boat to inspect damage unless a trained emergency response makes that unavoidable; current, cold water, waves and an unstable hull can turn inspection into rescue.
For a trailerable outboard or sterndrive, trim only as the manufacturer's instructions and conditions allow. Do not force a damaged trim system or raise hardware where it could contact the hull. From aboard, look for missing or bent blades, fishing line, a damaged skeg, gearcase cracks, oil sheen, loose mounting, transom movement and steering components out of alignment.

Hull, drive and steering damage are connected
Outboards and sterndrives transmit impact through mounting brackets, trim systems and the transom. Inboards can transmit it through the propeller, shaft, strut, bearings and hull structure. Jet drives have different intake, impeller and steering risks. Sailboats add keel, rudder and internal-grid concerns. A universal propeller-only checklist cannot clear every boat.

Return under own power only when people are well, the boat is dry and stable, steering and cooling are normal, no vibration or leak exists, and the route is short, protected and compatible with minimum power. Continue monitoring bilges, temperature, alarms and steering.
Request assistance or a tow when propulsion condition is uncertain, vibration appears, steering changes, the route crosses open water or the boat cannot maintain safe control at low power. Give the towing provider the boat's size, propulsion, position, people aboard and damage concern.
Make an urgency or distress call when injury, flooding, fire, loss of control, grounding in dangerous conditions or immediate threat exists. The label matters less than clear facts and early communication.

The dock inspection is not the final clearance
After recovery, do not run the damaged system on the trailer or at the dock unless the manufacturer procedure, cooling supply and safety controls make the test appropriate. Inspect the propeller, hub, shaft, skeg, gearcase oil, drain-plug magnets where specified, steering, mounts, transom, hull, bilges and alarms. Compare with pre-trip photographs and service records.
Propeller replacement alone may hide a bent shaft or damaged seal. Water or metal in gear lubricant, persistent vibration, new play, binding steering, cracking or leakage requires qualified diagnosis. Follow the exact engine, drive and boat manuals; torque values, removal sequences and inspection limits are model-specific.

Prevention is route discipline, not a stronger propeller
