Plan the lock before the approach

Review the current operating schedule, dimensions, communication method, vertical clearance and local instructions before the trip. Identify whether the lock uses fixed cables, floating bollards, pipes, recessed ladders or another arrangement, because the crew's line plan depends on what will actually be available inside.

Reduce loose gear and brief the crew while the boat is still in open water. Assign the helm, bow line, stern line and lookout jobs. Decide which side will be presented, place fenders from bow quarter through stern quarter and keep one spare fender ready for an unexpected wall or neighboring boat.

Make a controlled approach

Approach at the lowest speed that preserves steering. Monitor traffic, wind and current near the entrance, and wait outside until directed or until signals clearly permit entry. Do not crowd the gate, pass another boat in the throat or assume the chamber is ready because a gate appears open.

The helm should choose a position that leaves room to stop and abort. Current can accelerate near structures, and wind may be blocked until the boat is almost inside. Use short, clear crew language and avoid last-second side changes unless the original side becomes unsafe.

Use lines to control position, not to moor permanently

A lock line is a moving control line. Lead it so a crew member can take in or ease continuously as the water level changes. Never tie a fixed line short to a cleat unless the lock's approved floating hardware is designed for that use. A rising or falling boat can be pulled under, hung from the wall or rolled toward the chamber if a line jams.

Keep turns around a cleat light enough that the line can run. The crew should stand where hands cannot be trapped between rope, cleat and wall. Use boat hooks only as reach tools, not as structural poles, and never place a person on the swim platform during the cycle.

Manage turbulence and neighboring boats

Prop wash, gate flow and filling turbulence can move the boat in ways that are not obvious from the surface. Hold the boat parallel to the wall with balanced bow and stern control rather than trying to win every small movement with throttle.

Leave enough distance from other boats for their lines, engines and fenders to work. Larger vessels may react slowly but create stronger water movement. If control is deteriorating, communicate early with the lock operator and neighboring crews instead of waiting until contact is unavoidable.

Handle rising and falling locks differently

In a rising lock, the crew normally takes in line while watching fenders climb or catch on wall features. In a falling lock, ease line steadily and watch for rails, recesses or projections that can trap a fender or rub rail. Reposition fenders before they become wedged.

The helm should keep the engine available but use it only when necessary and allowed. Exhaust, propeller risk and turbulent water make unnecessary throttle a poor substitute for properly led lines. Confirm that every person remains aboard and clear of pinch points throughout the cycle.

Leave only after the exit is truly clear

Wait for the signal or direction to depart, then release lines in an organized order. Check that no line, fender or boat hook is trailing near the propeller. Allow faster or less maneuverable traffic the room required by local procedure.

After clearing the structure, move out of the traffic lane before reorganizing the deck. Record anything that should change at the next lock—fender height, line length, crew position or radio channel—while the experience is fresh.
