Boat Trailer Spare Tires: Match the Tire, Wheel, Load, Mount—and Tools

A spare is useful only when the tire, wheel, mount and tools all fit—and the stopping place is safe enough to use them.

Buying a tire with the same diameter is not enough. A usable boat-trailer spare must carry the required load, fit the hub and studs, clear the brake and frame, accept the correct wheel hardware and travel on a carrier that does not create a new clearance or tongue-load problem. The roadside kit must also reach the trailer's approved lifting point and move the actual lug nuts. Start with records and measurements, not an online fitment promise.

Begin with the trailer label and current installed parts

Photograph the certification or tire placard, every tire sidewall, the wheel, hub, lug hardware and axle identification. Record tire size, load range or service description, maximum cold inflation shown on the tire, wheel diameter and width, bolt pattern, pilot style, offset, stud size and whether the trailer maker specifies particular nuts or torque.
