Spring commissioning is the process of returning a stored boat to service without turning the first warm Saturday into a repair session at the launch ramp.
Start with the storage record
Review the fall layup list before touching the boat. Identify drain plugs removed, hoses disconnected, antifreeze added, batteries removed, fuel treated, seacocks left open or closed and any repairs intentionally deferred.
A commissioning checklist should reverse known winterization steps, not rely on memory. Keep tags on disconnected hoses and open circuits until the corresponding system has been inspected and restored.
Inspect hull, deck and underwater gear
Walk the hull in good light. Look for impact damage, stress cracks, blistering, loose rub rail, failed sealant, blocked drains and changes around transducers, struts, shafts, drives or outboard brackets. Inspect propellers for damage and verify cotter pins, locking devices and anodes.
Clean and wax as appropriate, but do not polish away evidence before understanding it. Check through-hulls and seacocks for movement, corrosion and hose security. Reinstall drain plugs only after confirming their condition and exact locations.
Restore engines and fuel systems deliberately
Inspect oil, coolant, belts, hoses, clamps, impellers, filters, spark or ignition components and visible wiring according to manufacturer instructions. Confirm that winterization plugs and raw-water connections are restored correctly.
Examine fuel lines, primer bulbs, tanks, vents, fills and separators. Old fuel, water contamination or rodent damage should be resolved before cranking. Use proper ventilation and fire precautions whenever fuel systems are opened.
Bring batteries and charging online
Clean and inspect batteries, boxes, hold-downs, cables and terminals. Verify state of charge and age, then reconnect with correct polarity and protected tools. A battery that survived winter may still fail a load test.
Test shore-power connections, onboard chargers, alternator output and battery switches. Confirm that critical loads are on the intended banks and that automatic bilge pumps remain powered when the master switch is off, if that is the designed configuration.
Flush and pressure-test plumbing
Reconnect freshwater, washdown, head, livewell and raw-water systems one circuit at a time. Fill cautiously and watch every fitting that was opened for winter. Sanitize potable-water systems using product and manufacturer guidance.
Inspect pumps for dry-running damage, confirm strainers are clean and verify that discharge paths are clear. Test the head and holding-tank system at the dock where a leak can be managed.
Update safety and navigation equipment
Inspect life jackets for size, condition and accessibility. Check fire extinguishers, visual distress signals, sound-producing devices, throwable flotation, first-aid supplies, carbon-monoxide alarms and required documentation. Replace expired items.
Update electronic charts and software before the launch day, then verify that GPS, depth, VHF, AIS and navigation lights function together without voltage resets or network errors.
Commission the trailer and launch gear
For trailer boats, inspect tires, age codes, bearings, brakes, lights, bunks, rollers, winch, strap, safety chains, coupler and breakaway equipment. Check the spare tire and the tools needed to change it.
Practice the launch sequence at home: drain plug, tie-downs, transom saver, battery switch, lines, fenders and key. A laminated launch card saves more time than another accessory in the glove box.
Make the first run a shakedown
Launch with daylight, mild weather and enough time to stop. Check the bilge immediately, then run at idle while monitoring cooling flow, pressure, temperature and charging. Increase load gradually.
Stay close enough to return easily. Operate every system, recheck fluid levels and inspect for leaks afterward. Write down deficiencies before unloading the boat; small observations disappear quickly once the day becomes normal.
