A raft-up works because several boats temporarily behave like one floating system. The group needs one plan for anchors, loads, movement, weather and departure—not ten separate assumptions tied together with dock lines.
Choose a location that can carry the whole group
Evaluate depth, bottom, swing room, wake exposure, wind shift, traffic and local restrictions for the combined raft rather than the first boat alone. A cove that is comfortable for one boat may become cramped when beam, freeboard and turning radius multiply.
Designate an anchor boat with suitable ground tackle, experienced crew and enough deck hardware. Depending on conditions and local practice, additional anchors may be appropriate, but multiple anchors create their own retrieval and entanglement problems. Agree on the arrangement before the second boat arrives.
Build from the center outward
The anchor boat should be settled and its position confirmed before others come alongside. Similar hull sizes and freeboards are easier to pair. Place heavier or taller boats where their movement will not overpower a much smaller neighbor.
Approaching boats should rig fenders and lines before entering the raft. Use bow, stern and spring lines so boats cannot surge independently. Protect rails, windows and hardware rather than placing one undersized fender at midship and hoping it stays in place.
Control people movement
Tell passengers where crossing is allowed and what they may hold. Step across only when boats are stable, use a handhold and avoid walking on upholstery, hatches or narrow gunwales. Children and pets need direct supervision because gaps change constantly.
Weight shifts can lower a fender, tighten a line or roll a small boat sharply. Keep coolers, fuel, grills and heavy gear from migrating randomly through the raft. Establish one primary social area instead of turning every deck into a walkway.
Treat swimming as a separate operation
Shut engines down and control keys before anyone enters the water. Account for every swimmer, designate a lookout and provide a defined entry and recovery point. Current can carry a swimmer under or away from the raft faster than people expect.
Keep propellers, outdrives, ladders and anchor lines visible in the plan. Do not restart any engine until swimmers are counted and physically aboard. Alcohol, sun and social distraction make a formal head count more important, not less.
Watch the combined system
Recheck anchor position, line chafe, fender height and weather through the day. Windage grows as boats are added, and wakes can load the outside boats heavily. A line that was comfortable at noon may become dangerous after a wind shift or falling water level.
For an overnight raft, assign checks and confirm bilge, battery, ventilation and carbon-monoxide precautions on every boat. Generators and engines can create exhaust exposure for neighboring cabins even when the operator's own cabin seems clear.
Separate before conditions force it
Agree on the departure order and which boat leaves first. Clear swimmers, collect loose gear and move passengers back to their own boats before lines begin coming off. Outside boats usually need the simplest escape path.
If weather, dragging or medical trouble develops, break the raft early while crews are organized. Social pressure is not a reason to consume the last safe departure window. A good raft-up ends with every boat able to maneuver independently.
