Current does not wait for the boat to slow down. The operator must use moving water as part of the approach, keep enough flow over the rudder or drive for control and avoid committing the crew before the boat is stable.
Read the water before the approach
Watch fixed pilings, buoys, debris, neighboring boats and surface texture to determine direction and strength. Compare current with wind; they may oppose each other and affect the bow and stern differently.
Identify the strongest controlling condition near the actual berth, not in open water. Eddies, walls, bridge structures and marina basins can reverse or accelerate flow. Make a slow observation pass when uncertainty is high.
Choose the approach that preserves control
An approach into the current usually provides better control because water continues moving past steering surfaces at low ground speed. The boat can hold position with modest power while the operator adjusts angle.
A down-current approach can become unrecoverable quickly. If the berth requires one, increase the amount of open escape room and plan an earlier turn. Do not use a difficult geometry merely because it is the shortest route.
Use ferry angle instead of aiming directly
Point the bow slightly into the current while allowing the boat to move sideways toward the target. Adjust angle and power in small steps. The required angle changes with current, hull windage and steering response.
Judge movement relative to the dock, not by where the bow points. Overcorrecting creates a cycle of large throttle and steering inputs. Pause in a controlled hold position whenever possible before the final translation.
Give the first line a clear purpose
A midship spring line can stop fore-and-aft movement and allow the helm to use gentle power to bring the boat alongside. A bow or stern line may be correct in another geometry, but the crew must know what the line is expected to control.
Do not let crew members jump, wrap lines around hands or step off while the boat is moving beyond their ability. A missed line is a reason to reset, not a signal for the crew to improvise physically.
Account for prop walk and pivot behavior
Single inboards, outboards, sterndrives and twin-engine boats each respond differently in reverse and at low speed. Practice in open water to learn where the boat pivots and how quickly steering authority disappears.
Use short applications of power with a neutral pause when appropriate. Continuous high power near the dock increases consequence and can wash out neighboring boats. Thrusters are useful aids but should not be the only plan.
Abort early and depart with the same discipline
Define the point where the approach becomes a go-around. Preserve open water on the escape side and communicate the abort command before lines are thrown. Current makes late recovery much harder than an early reset.
When departing, determine which line will hold the boat while others are removed. Use the current to open a safe angle, then release the final line without allowing it near the propeller. Reassess traffic before entering the channel.
